9: Smell
You know how people say India has its own smell? I've decided on a smell for China, if not Beijing. It's this mix between gasoline, plastic, and pine. I've smelled it in malls, at my university, in the metro, and in restaurants. It doesn't smell as bad as it sounds, though, especially if you like the smell of gasoline or pine.

What would foreigners say is the smell for America?
ReplyDeleteThat's so funny, because we always use to talk about what we referred to as the "China funk" I had never been there, but several of my friends interned in China. When I worked for the fireworks company, we always dreaded opening up the containers that came over with all our fireworks because they always smelled so bizarre. Like you said, not really a bad smell, but seriously distinctive and a little disconcerting.
